Botanical classification and appearance

Mitragyna speciosa belongs to the Rubiaceae family, alongside coffee and Cinchona. It is an evergreen tree with a generally straight trunk, grey-green bark and a broad, leafy crown. Its leaves are oval to broadly ovate and show prominent lateral veins.

Natural habitat

The species is native to humid lowland regions of Southeast Asia. It is associated with riverbanks, floodplain forests, freshwater wetlands and other environments with high humidity and moisture-rich soils. It is also cultivated outside its original range under managed conditions.

Published botanical and chemical literature describes numerous indole and oxindole alkaloids in Mitragyna speciosa leaves. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are among the most frequently discussed, alongside compounds such as speciogynine, speciociliatine and paynantheine.
